Good one Ray. But as we all know the people who we can objectively label right wing have always managed to maintain their power through the use of fear. They prey on the simple minded and uneducated and that is why the seek to keep them simple minded and uneducated because if they were to get educated and join the "elite" they would never support the right wing agenda, which in the end is just about the amalgamation of power and money. I really think that the masses of America are becoming dumber and dumber and there are those that promote this for their own opportunistic advantage. Their failure to see how that impacts the US's long term future would be questionable, but I think they see it but don't care because its not in their short term interests in maintaining power and a financial advantage to do so.

I see your point, and really a lot of people (at least on the left, where I live), *are* asking that question. Just in a very undirected way; it's mostly rhetorical for now.

I suspect the answer lies in the very point you made, though. Marriage, for the state/government, IS a contract. It deals with assets, responsibilities, rights (hospital visitation, for instance), and provides a legal grounding for dealing with dissolution or end-of-life questions. Without this, a lot of things we take for granted become very difficult.

Of course, IANAL. I'm just a blogger with opinions. :)

I think the real question here, and one that no one on either side asks, is why does the GOVERNMENT sanction marriage at all? Why do I need a government permit to get married? If the religious proponents of Prop 8 really wanted to defend the "Biblical sanctity" of marriage, they would be marching on Washington and their State capitols to demand that the politicians stop trying to issue permits to get married.

Governments, via the judicial system, enforce contracts. The ONLY reason a government -- ANY GOVERNMENT -- should get involved in the lives of two (or more) people is to enforce whatever contracts they have agreed to (dissolution of assets, child custody, etc.).

The Supreme Court successfuly upheld the 2nd admendment. The only thing concerning about this case was that it ended up with a 5-4 majority.
